Ilja Berukof and Dries Van Heukelom defend their home turf in Mol!

This past weekend, we kicked off the 2014 Belgian Legacy Cup with a first trial, held at Magicclub Mol’s headquarters. 43 players signed up to battle for a stacked prize pool and some valuable byes for December’s Main Event.

During 6 rounds of swiss, we saw some incredible matches between a variety of decks, in what a can only be described as a diverse, healthy format. 7 different archetypes reached the playoffs:

  • 2 ANT Storm-decks, piloted by Cédric Moulin and Dries Van Heukelom;
  • 1 Sneak and Show-deck, piloted by veteran player Ilja Berukof;
  • 1 Reanimator, the weapon of choice for Johan De Gruyter;
  • 1 Elves-deck, by Matthi Lenaerts, the only player in the top-8 not sporting a playset of Brainstorms;
  • 2 Delver-decks, with Tierry Rasmussen opting for Canadian Threshold and Jeroen Van Heel on Team America;
  • 1 Four Color Control-concoction, wielded by Tom De Decker.

Top 8 decklists can be viewed here!

When the dust settled, Ilja Berukof and Dries Van Heukelom managed to capatalize on their home advantage, and combo’d their way through the playoffs. They refused to slay one of their own though, and thus decided to split the finals, with Dries offering Ilja the 2 byes. Congratulations to team Magicclub Mol’s Ilja Berukof and Dries Van Heukelom, our first Belgian Legacy Cup Trial-winners of 2014!
